Paints
What is the difference between primer and putty?
Putty and primer are both used before paint, but they do different jobs. Using them in the wrong order weakens the whole finish.

What each one does
- Putty levels and smooths the wall surface and fills small gaps
- Primer seals the surface and helps paint stick evenly
- Putty comes first, then primer, then paint
- Skipping either one shortens the life of the finish
Order of work
First clean the wall, then apply putty and let it dry completely. Sand it smooth, remove the dust, and only then apply primer. Paint goes on after the primer dries.
Common mistakes
- Applying primer before the putty has dried
- Using putty as a substitute for primer
- Not sanding the putty smooth before priming
- Leaving dust on the wall before priming
Practical checklist
- Clean the wall thoroughly first
- Apply putty and let it dry fully
- Sand smooth and remove all dust
- Apply primer and let it dry
- Then apply the top coats
